Many unsafe chemical additives in toothpaste and mouthwash may pass directly into the blood stream, even if you never swallow. This is because they are absorbed through the mucosal lining inside the mouth, which has an absorption efficiency of over 90 percent, according to the Physician's Desk Reference Handbook.
Most toothpastes are loaded with potentially dangerous chemicals, such as fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, sodium saccharin, sodium lauryl sulfate, pentasodium triphosphate, titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue #1, Yellow #5, and Yellow #10. Some of these additives, like sodium lauryl sulfate (a known skin irritant), have long been suspected of health-damaging effects.
