Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) was highly regarded in India as a perfume,
health-supporting herb, and skin tonic. Prized at the time of Christ, it was
used by Mary of Bethany to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper (John 12:2-3).
Spikenard is a relaxing and soothing oil for the skin. Physically Spikenard essential oil is
used as a diuretic, useful for rashes and skin allergies, spikenard is anti-fungal and has a
balancing effect on the menstrual cycle. Emotionally spikenard oil is reserved for deep
seated grief or old pain. Spikenard is used in palliative care to help ease the transition
from life to death.
