Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil
F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: What does "neat" mean?
A: It means that you are using the oil straight from the bottle, without a carrier oil to dilute it.
Q: What is a carrier oil?
A: A carrier oil is a base oil that is used with essential oils to reduce any burning, slow the absorption rate, and spread the essential oil further. Examples are coconut, olive, jojoba, sesame, almond oils. Young Living has a carrier oil called V-6 that is a combination.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the natural, highly concentrated essences extracted from specific herbs in their living state for their healing capabilities. Essential oils can be derived from plants, shrubs, flowers, grasses, fruits, bushes, seeds, roots, bark and trees

How long does the effect of the oil last?
Essential oils can last between 12 - 24 hours in the body. Certain factors, such as viscosity, concentration, application method (topical or inhalation), skin type and the area of the body where the oils were applied, can extend or diminish the therapeutic duration. In addition, the condition of the skin affects the degree to which oils are absorbed. For example, a hot bath hydrates the skin making it more permeable for the oils. In addition, dry, cracked or damaged skin can also be more permeable, so essential oils should be applied cautiously.
How many drops are in a 5ml and 15ml bottle and how long does a bottle last?
Around 100 in a 5ml and 300 in a 15ml, depending on the viscosity of the oil.
A 5 ml bottle contains about 85 drops so it depends on how many drops you are using per day, but we find that when used together, both last a little over 2 months.
Essential Oils do not come with an expiration date, but optimum shelf life is maybe forever. (There were. After this time they lose some of their potency.
The brown glass makes it tricky to see how much is left in the bottle so it’s best to hold the bottle up to bright light. The blue glass is transparent enough to show the product level. Without backlighting, it is difficult to tell.
How do I store my essential oils?
Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool, dry, dark place away from sunlight or heat. If stored properly, most essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.
Young Living Essential Oils Oils are packaged in amber bottles that block out damaging light and radiation. The amber glass will only protect the natural energy state of the oil within the bottle.
How many oils can I use at once?
Essential oils are very powerful, and less is often more. We recommend starting slowly, not applying more than 3 different oils at the same time. Different oils can be rotated in throughout the day, including parasympathetic before meals and circadian rhythm before bed, but the general rule is that less is more.
Can your oils be ingested?
Yes, in fact we have a spcifically labled line of oils: "Vitality Oils". Perfect for adding flavor to your favorite foods or using as dietary supplements, the Vitality dietary essential oil line gives you the freedom to share and explore some of our best-loved essential oils in a variety of nutritious and delicious ways.
Do I need to dilute Young Living Oil blends?
Diluting is a personal choice and depends on each individual. We always recommend diluting the oils to start, then working up to full potency. If an essential oil feels too hot or causes any redness, dilute immediately with a carrier oil, like olive or coconut oil; you can apply it directly on top of the essential oil. The carrier oil will dilute the essential oil and cause slower absorption. This will also diminish or stop the irritation while continuing to provide the therapeutic benefits of the oil. After you have applied enough carrier oil to stop the reaction, you can then use soap and water to wash it all off. Water does not work as well initially for an essential oil reaction as it traps the oil against the skin and can increase irritation.
Safety guidelines with essential oils
Essential Oils are relatively safe when used appropriately. Here are a few safety tips.
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use.
- Essential oils rich in menthol, such as peppermint, should not be used on throat and neck area of children under 18 months of age.
- Keep essential oils away from the eye area and never put them directly into the ears. Do not handle contact lenses with essential oils on your fingers. Even in minute amounts, many essential oils can damage contacts and will irritate eyes.
- Pregnant woman should always consult their healthcare professional when starting any type of health program.
- Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their healthcare professional before using essential oils.
- People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the upper arm, for 30 minutes before applying the oil on others of the body.
- The bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places, to use essential oils.
- Dry, cracked or damaged skin can also be more permeable, so essential oils should be applied cautiously.
- Keep essential oils away from open flames, sparks or electricity. Some essential oils, including Orange, Fir, Pine and Peppermint are potentially flammable.
- If an essential oil causes any discomfort or skin irritation, apply another oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil to dilute the essential oils. Do not apply water as this will trap the oil against the skin and can increase irritation.
- When adding essential oils to the bath, we advise mixing the oil into bath salts such as Epson salt. When essential oils are put directly into bathwater they can float, undiluted on top of the water and adhere to the skin. Generally, never use more than 10 drops of essential oil in a bath

Are Young Living Oils Certified Organic?
According to Young Living customer service: “To provide organic products to our members is very important and we strive to use organic matter in all the steps from growing, processing, to selling. We do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on our farms. Young Living cannot place the word ‘organic’ on our labels because we occasionally import some oils from different countries and most of these countries do not have organic standards that match the US standards. This is the reason why we cannot certify them as organic. Rest assured, though, that Young Living will not accept oils or plants that do not meet our strict standards.”

How do Essential Oils Work?
Essential Oils have helpful therapeutic properties for a wide variety of problems, conditions and situations, in addition to simply being fragrant. But like anything else, there are a few important issues you MUST consider first in order for them to "work". Read more about the history and the dynamics of the essential oils here:

How is Young Living different from other essential oil companies?
Wow - that is a great question. Whe I started using the Young Living oils in 1997, they were the only company of any integrity, and still are today. Young Living is the ONLY essential oil company that grows their own herbs, distills, tests and bottles them. They are pure and unadulterated. "Pure” essential oils have no contamination, oesticide, GMO's or any other byproducts. Young Living does not add ANY additives or chemicals, which are harmful to skin and reduce the effectiveness and purpose of the essential oil. You might find where the plant was grown or type of water used in the distilling process. It can be a daunting experience choosing the best essential oil brand. Read more facts here about why I think Young Living is the "only" oil that I choose to apply, diffuse and ingest:

What is the benefit of blended oils over single oils?
The main answer depends upon what your body needs.
Blends: The advantage of an oil blend, combining two or more pure single essential oils is that is will be more effective than if those oils had been used separately. When oils are mixed together in the correct order and in the correct proportions, a chemical compound is created that is very specific and powerful.
The frequencies of each single oil seem to act both separately and as part of the unique
frequency of the blend. Often a drop or two of the blended oil will accomplish what a drop or two of each
of the singles oils would do. It will also give you the unique healing properties of the blend itself.
Singles: Single oils already have their own unique properties. For example: Lavender, peppermint, grapefruit, chamomile, lemon, ylang-ylang all help produce happy, joyous moods.
What is frequency and how does it pertain to essential oils?
Everything has a frequency. The vibrational frequency of essential oils are measured in megahertz (MHz),
which cycle at a rate much faster than electricity, equal to 1,000,000 cycles per second.
When someone says they wish to ‘raise their frequency’, this simple means that they wish to
increase their vibrational frequency to such a level that allows them to reach a state of
spiritual enlightenment. Diffusing or inhaling an essential oil with a high frequency may help
raise your own vibrational frequency.

How do essential oils affect the brain?
Did you know that our sense of smell is the only sense directly tied to the limbic area of the brain, which is considered the emotional control center? This means that when essential oils are inhaled, they go directly to the brain. Our other four senses: Sight, taste, touch and hearing, are first routed through the thalamus before reaching designated areas of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, memory, blood pressure, breathing, stress levels, and hormone balance; therapeutic-grade essential oils can have unbelievable physiological and psychological effects. Each of the essential oils have therapeutic stimulating, calming, sedative, balancing properties.
